Tithing

What does it really mean to give? Most of us think of tithing as a financial transaction, a percentage, a line item in a budget. But there is something deeper going on when we place our resources into God's hands. At the heart of this message is the story of a poor widow who dropped two small copper coins into the temple treasury, an amount so insignificant the bookkeeper would barely notice. Yet Jesus told his disciples she had given more than everyone else combined. How can that be? Because there are two sets of books being kept in the universe. The earthly ledger counts dollars and cents. The heavenly ledger counts faith and trust. This widow had nothing left after that offering, and that is precisely what made it extraordinary. She was not just giving money; she was entrusting her very survival to God. That is the spiritual insight that cuts through all the noise around tithing: giving is ultimately an act of trust, and trust is what God sees when he looks at our hearts. Elder Fran Havko encourages all of us ... to reflect on our own giving, the question isn't- how much we are contributing, but how much we are trusting.
